Unfortunately, the same technologies that make Web 2.0 so interesting, are not friendly to assistive technologies. Accessibility expert Trenton Moss uses the Amazon Diamond Search as an example of a technology that is not useable by assistive technology. The alternative, however, is simple. Just have a page without the technology that is optimized for useability.
Another area that Moss points out as difficult for assistive technology is social network and sharing sites. Flickr, YouTube and blogs in general contain content created by a wide variety of individuals, most of whom do not know how to make their content useable.
What can a business do? Ideally, hire a usability/accessibility expert to optimize their website and web-based applications. At the very least, work with web design professionals who are aware of the standards and can create alternatives to pages that cannot be make 'friendly'.
