Six Major Problems with WebOS
Ebrahim Ezzy comments on the downside of WebOS - basically virtual desktops that are on the internet.  The desktops contain toolbars, widgets, and folders just like your regular local desktop.  I haven't really seen the point of them and Ezzy agrees.  His list of problems mirrors my own feelings exactly
  1. Works at the mercy of the network and the server load.
  2. While the many enabling capabilities of network-based storage architectures are of substantial value - issues of authentication, access control, and security/privacy of the stored data remain. Are you going to let someone else handle your data? Would you trust a startup to protect your critical data? [Ed: for an interesting side argument, see this discussion of IBM's SoulPad from a year ago]
  3. The privacy, control, reliability and performance issues prevent the WebOS from being an alternative to the ever-more-affordable and easy-to-use desktop.
  4. WebOS requires a fast and reliable (if not flawless) connection to work correctly.
  5. Inability to operate peripheral devices.
  6. Web applications rely on open source infrastructure and an array of technologies and formats - and these are constantly changing, often with no regard for being backwards compatible.
Many of the comments to this post agree.  Can we hear from people who are pro-WebOS?  I'd love to get a guest article on your thoughts.

Dear Diane

First of all, thank you for request to comment.

For a short introduction - My name is Leon Bollerup - I am the lead devleoper of Team ORCA - www.orcadesktop.com - A free WebDesktop that presently is out in a Beta1

First of all, as for authentication in a WebOS - i realy dont see this as a problem - 95% of the worlds leading banks use a webinterface for netbanking - so why should a WebOS/WebDesktop be any less secure ?

Yes, its true that a WebOS will require a stable internet connection - ORCA has been tested with a 256/256kbit connection - this basicly has todo with the fact that ORCA have 2 kernels - one that is working on the client side, and another the operates server side - the client side kernel takes 98% of all work done, while the serverside just stores changes/data.

As for the question if a WebOS could be a competive sollution to a real OS - i think we here have do start be defining what a "real" OS is.

A Real "OS" is a system that boots your computer into your selective user interface - for this we have "OrcZilla" and "OrcWin" - a small bootable Linux or Windows distrubtion that will allow the computer to connect to a remotely hosted WebDesktop.

All in all - I think WebOS could very well become the future application platform for the users who NEED this sollution - its basicly about defining what your own need as a computer is.

I know alot of people have alot of questions regarding WebOS's - web 2.0/web 3.0 - and i'll be more than happy to answer those.

With kind Regards
Leon Bollerup
Lead Devleoper

Thanks so much for your input, Leon. I know very little about WebOS and just see it from a skeptical consumer's point of view. It is really good to understand where you are coming from.

WebOS is a great idea, but in my opinion it has questionable value. It can be fun, exciting, entertaining and even convenient for some - but being as efficient, flexible and productive as a desktop is practically impossible. The majority of these applications are almost essentially superfluous, emphasizing novelty over substance.

WebOS is very much misleading. I would prefer WebDesktop at most. An OS runs on a computer, virtual or not. I don't find it useful at all... Maybe for very special needs (like people who don't have a computer, or are using other computers most of the time), but the normal users don't need it at all. It can be fun to play with for about 10 minutes though...
