In comparing the old to the new, it isn't really less crowded, but to me it feels less crowded. It is definitely much easier for me to read.
If the home page 'recognizes' you, you can access your mail, Yahoo Messenger and your local weather right from the front page - nifty.
Perhaps now Yahoo will add Ajax functionality to the personalized home pages. I'd like to be able to put modules in any column, instead of being limited to narrow and wide columns. Ajax tabs which consolidate all the news would be nice as well.
