The New Way to Search: Mapping Relationships

I am very interested in the way information can be shown as a cloud, with connections showing links and proximity and size illustrating importance. I'm not a huge fan of tag clouds - they just don't speak to me. I like the way LivePlasma display relationships. LivePlasma takes a musical group and creates a relationship cloud with connectors, proxity and size that show interconnectedness.

I started out with U2 and this is what it gave me. Interesting to see how the music I like interconnects in ways I never realized.

Now, imagine instead of a hierarchical management chart, creating a map similar to this. You could actually see the relationships that everyone in the organization has.

This basically takes mind mapping to the next level - using it to define our knowledge in really interesting ways.

Stowe Boyd reports that Quintura is creating something similar for Yahoo searches - here is a demo of their product.
