Collaboration Tools Need Integrated Full Text Searches

What originally got me interested in Central Desktop (see my review), was a post on their blog about the importance of search to collaborative applications.

Good Collaboration Tools MUST have GOOD search integrated, otherwise, the tool is doomed to become a derivative form of a message board or forum. While forums are useful and have their place, there is nothing revolutionary about a collaboration tool's ability to act as a message board.

While many collaboration tools contain some degree of search, few if any, encompass full text and complete document search.

I would add that searches should encompass the ability to search by date and time created and modified, by person, keywords, title, and a combination of all of the above.

Tagging has become so ubiquitous that it would also be useful, but if full text and document search is enabled, the tags could be built right into the text of the document.

Good stuf Diane... thanks... Can tags be built into the text of a document now...? Not sure how that happens? Do you know?

It depends. In Microsoft office documents keywords can be added to the properties (File->Properties). Windows Find will search on Keywords, but considering how slow Windows Find is... I haven't checked to see if the Yahoo Indexer or Google Desktop Search search properties of documents as well - if so, they are much faster than the Find supplied with Windows.
