BusinessWeek Online reports that Microsoft is planning to implement social search strategies into MSN Search. Yahoo and Google have been developing their own social search methods, although I expect that Microsoft will come up with something much more sophisticated then the current offerings. For one thing, they have more than two hundred million registered users for Hot Mail and Instant Messaging.

Let me say that again - 200,000,000 users plus!

While Microsoft's specific plans are under wraps, there's talk that it's planning to acquire Eurekster.com. From the Eurekster site, we read:

"Swickis uses the wisdom of crowds to improve search results - unlike other search engines, you and your community have total control over the results. Anyone can create a swicki and publish it on their web site using our customizable search widget, complete with its very own Buzzcloud that constantly updates to show the hot searches in your community."

Officially, there's no comment from Microsoft or Eurekster about the prospects of a buy-out, but it certainly makes sense considering that it's the strategy that MS has used so often in the past with Live Meeting, Groove and, most recently, ProClarity.
