Slashdot's
Cmdr Taco announced yesterday that the creator of PGP (Pretty Good Privacy), Phil Zimmerman, has developed a secure means of talking over VoIP, called Zfone. It works with any VoIP network that uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) such as Vonage and Cisco. Thankfully, SIP is the most commonly-used standard among VoIP providers so it should be easy for most of us to implement with out existing VoIP phones.
Skype, however, doesn't use SIP so Zfone won't work on their network.
The bad news is that Zfone is only available for Mac and Linux users right now, but a Windows version is coming soon.
Why is this important, and who would really bother listening in to your calls? The same folks who want to know what you're reading at the library, who you're talking to overseas, and who are so quick to question your patriotism when you question their motives for invading foreign nations. Zfone couldn't have come at a more perfect time, nor at a worse time for all of us.
having a secure call over Windows is an oxymoron.
