For better or for worse, Web 2.0 developers who want to recreate the MS Office without the "MS" need to do what Microsoft has done so consistently for so long - integrate their applications. By this I mean that I should be able to easily insert my spreadsheet chart into my Writely document, or import a slide from my presentation program. It would be great if I could make my G-mail text look as good as my Word processor document, wouldn't it?
Sometimes I wonder if today's Web 2.0 developers are just trying to see which popular desk-top applications they can re-create online. Listen, gentlemen. That's not enough. You can't just do online what MS has already done on a desktop. You've got to improve upon it. And that's not easy to do, because if it was, Google Office would be more than just an unsubstantiated rumor.

I totally agree Jeff. In fact this was the thinking behind our latest product at Jotspot -- Jotspot Tracker. We believe spreadsheets changed the world by putting amazing tools on everybody's desktop. But they don't work really well in a collaborative environment. Our thinking was take a spreadsheet and make it work well online, not try and duplicate a desktop spreadsheet. Check it out if you get a chance.
